The feast that is now known as the first celebration of Thanksgiving, was held in 1621 following a successful corn harvest the past fall. The previous winter, the fledgling Plymouth colonists had lost half of their people to disease and malnutrition.
This successful corn harvest, as well as what they learned from local Native American tribes about food gathering in the area, ensured that the colonists would be able to feed themselves, and thus, survive going forward.
The colonists’ response to the harvest, and their newfound partnership with the Wampanoag tribe, was to hold a feast in thanks to God and in celebration of the bounty.
Pilgrim chronicler Edward Winslow wrote this about the feast:
“Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labors; they four in one day killed as much fowl, as with a little help beside, served the Company almost a week, at which time amongst other Recreations, we exercised our Arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five Deer, which they brought to the Plantation and bestowed on our Governor, and upon the Captain and others. And although it be not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."
This blows me away.
I’m particularly touched by the following portion: “And although it be not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plenty.”
In this newsletter, Evan Invests, I explore the world of investing from the perspective of the everyday investor by making small investments every month. Follow along with me as I invest in cryptocurrency, index funds, stocks and more.
In this newsletter I share about my journey of stewarding the resources I’ve been giving, and then growing them through (hopefully) wise investments. But today, I’m thankful for the opportunity to take a step back.
The size of my investment portfolio is a reflection of my little slice of creation. It may be larger than the portfolio of some of my readers and smaller than the portfolio of other readers.
That’s not really what matters.
Through our families, career choices and other life circumstances, we’re all allotted a certain amount of resources with which to work. Each of us is given a different amount. The amount isn’t ultimately what matters. What matters is whether you and I have been faithful with what we’ve been given.
This newsletter is small enough that I personally know every single one of my subscribers. We are all extremely blessed.
And today, on Thanksgiving day in 2022, I’m thankful for the opportunity to take a step back and acknowledge the bounty that we’ve experienced in our lives.
From my family to your family, Happy Thanksgiving, and God bless you!
I’ll report back next week.

Love it. I also love Thanksgiving. That may not be politically correct at the moment but I like to think all people in the past were not inherently evil as your article adroitly points out.
Thanks for the efforts. Keep em coming!!
